Sculpture by NFT Artist Beeple Set for $15M Auction at Christie’s

Artist Beeple, who sold a digital collage at Christie’s for $69 million this spring, plans to sell a 7-foot-tall real-life sculpture named HUMAN ONE on Nov. 9 for about $15 million through Christie’s, according to a Thursday (Oct. 28) report in The Wall Street Journal.

The sculpture by Beeple, whose real name is Mike Winkelmann, is a white mahogany column covered in LED screens that shows a life-size astronaut dressed in a mirrored helmet and silver suit. The large pillar slowly rotates so it looks like it’s walking through science fiction-style landscapes and Beeple says he’ll change the backdrops several times a day. The sculpture also comes with a non-fungible token (NFT).

“It has such a gravitas, and it sucks you in,” Noah Davis, Christie’s head of digital art and online sales, told WSJ.

Sotheby’s sold a $2.8 million acrylic box by digital artist FEWOCiOUS that contained a cartoonish blue, life-size figure wearing clothes designed by the artist for its owner to wear earlier this month in London.

“Collectors are getting sophisticated,” Davis said in the WDJ report. “They want to flex their individual tastes rather than buy something that’s one of 10,000.”

Artists have sold about $1.8 billion in NFT-associated art in the past year, according to market data tracker Nonfungible.com.
