‘Tis The Season To Go Shopping

Forty-three percent of shoppers plan to spend as much online as in stores this holiday season.

That’s just one of the surprising shopping stats revealed by this KentonGlobal study, which asked over 1,000 Americans how they planned to spend this holiday season. How are mobile and tablet shopping affecting the industry, and how do men and women differ in their spending habits?  Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting findings.

Shoppers Don’t Procrastinate

According to the survey, a surprisingly large percentage of holiday shoppers begin buying their gifts very early – as in before Halloween. Twenty-eight percent said they shop before October’s final day, while another 62 percent said they begin before Thanksgiving. The final 38 percent start between Thanksgiving and Christmas. In terms of expected share of online purchasing, 44 percent is expected before Halloween, while 41 percent should come between Halloween and Thanksgiving and just 29 percent between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Spending Trends

How much money are consumers expected to pay per gift? For every $10,000 spent, customers are expected to buy 24 $100 gifts, nine $200 gifts, six $300 gifts and four $500 gifts. Only two $1,000 gifts are expected to be purchased, and most shoppers will buy gifts for between three and 10 people. Overall, 70 percent of respondents said they plan to buy some gifts in the $100 range.
