Wired on January 10 reported that over 800 transactions were made. The retailer said in a statement that many of the customers were first-time visitors to the site.

CEO Patrick Byrne remarked on Twitter that bitcoin-related traffic was much higher than expected:

“#Bitcoin’s first full day on @overstock.com was a huge success: 840 orders, $130,000 in sales. Almost all new customers. #stunned,” he tweeted.

In an interview with CNN International on January 12, Byrne commented that other online retailers, including Amazon, will eventually accept the virtual currency.
