In a use for Apple’s Passbook and Google mWallet that its creators likely never quite intended, Showtime has found a way to promote its newest offering–a horror genre show called ‘Penny Dreadful’– using both online payment methods.

    Users with a Penny Dreadful fan pass will receive no bar or loyalty codes, and will receive no rebates but they will get a reminder that lets them know that new content is available online.

    Even more than the push reminds, the new passbook system will also tap into geofencing elements on the show’s billboards through out the New York and Los Angeles areas–  an alert for the show will automatically pop up on fan pass owners phone’s lock screen when they drive by.

    Apart form re-purposing Google Wallet and Apple Passbook as “mini-apps” for the show, Showtime has also made the pilot available for download in advance of the season premier on May 11, 2014.
