Costco, Tesco and Sam’s Club have joined a list of retailers who have shut down their online photo printing stores after suspicions of a possible data breach at PNI Digital Media, a Staples company that manages photo services for various websites.
The three retailers shut down their services after CVS disabled its website CVSphoto.com last week, and Walmart disabled its walmartphotocentre.ca website the week before to protect customer credit card information.
“We take the protection of information very seriously. PNI is investigating a potential credit card data issue, and outside security experts are assisting in the investigation,” said Kirk Saville, vice president of global communications at Staples Inc.

While the companies do the math, it’s tough to tell the actual impact of the breach at the moment. Some retailers like Costco Canada and Rite Aid have shut down their photo stores out of precaution even though PNI mostly has limited access to customers’ information, according to Reuters.
CVS and Walmart Canada have also asked their customers to monitor their credit statements as they resolve the case.
