Samsung recently acquired Viv Labs Inc., a tech firm run by a co-creator of Apple’s Siri. The AI platform, named Viv, will be introduced into Samsung smartphones, smart appliances and wearable tech. Samsung said third-party developers will be able to create, upload and integrate their own services to Viv.

Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft all have launched devices with digital assistants. Samsung hopes the Galaxy S8 and Viv will revitalize smartphone sales following major recalls and the recent discontinuation of its fire-prone Note 7. Samsung expects profits over three quarters into the first of 2017 to take a $5.4 billion hit. The S8 will hit the shelves in early 2017.
