Online Payments On The Rise In Romania

Romcard, a Romanian online payment provider, has registered a 38% in online speding in the country in 2012, amounting to 4.1 million transactions. These transactions added up to 176.4 million euros.

    Online transactions already peaked in 2009, when they jumped 75% from the previous year. They had been experiencing a slow growth since then, until 2012.

    The sectors to see the greatest increase were fashion with a 486% increase, donations (+111%), services (+54%) and flowers (+51%). The increase is blamed on a diversification of the market and the entry of new online players. The country has also seen the creation and adoption of a broader range of payment methods, namely online.

    The company estimates that online spending in 2013 will be influenced by new players coming into the market and the evolution of old players with an improvement in service offerings and the launch of marketing campaigns. The quality of payments will also play a big role in the growth of online spending and the company is committing itself to strengthening their payment methods’ security and ease of use.
