American consumers increased their debt load by $14.6 billion in December 2012, according to a new data from the Federal Reserve.

    Non-revolving debt, such as student loans, saw an 11.5 percent or $18.2 billion increase: the largest since November 2001. Credit card debit, however, fell by $3.6 billion.
