Klarna officially launched in Portugal on Wednesday (Nov. 17) and now offers its “Pay in 3” buy now, pay later (BNPL) option in the country, according to a press release.
With the addition of Portugal, Klarna is now active in 19 markets across three continents. Portuguese consumers can now use “Pay in 3” at any online store through the Klarna app and at integrated partner retailers.
With “Pay in 3,” the consumers pay for purchases in three installments with no interest or fees, when paid on time. Rather than charging the customer, Klarna charges the retailers that offer this BNPL service.
“I am excited to launch Klarna in Portugal, a country with a population of early digital adopters who have already started to actively turn away from high-cost credit options,” Sebastian Siemiatkowski, co-founder and CEO of Klarna, said in a press release.
Klarna’s integrated partner retailers in the country include Tradeinn, Sklum, Blackpeach and ISTO, and Klarna says more Portuguese and international brands are to follow soon.
This Portugal launch follows close behind Klarna’s official launch in Ireland on Nov. 9, where it also offers the “Pay in 3” service.

At that time, the company said the fee-free BNPL offering is intended as an alternative to credit cards — a move being embraced by shoppers in Ireland, who are increasingly turning to debit cards for daily spending.
At the time, Klarna said that debit card spending expanded three times faster than credit cards from 2015 to 2020.
On the same day it launched in Ireland, Klarna expanded its offerings for U.S. consumers and retailers to include flexible payments for subscriptions. It is the first company in the country to offer a tool to manage payments for quarterly and annual subscriptions, memberships and more.

The expansion allows consumers to pay for their beauty, apparel and fitness purchases in four interest-free payments and track it through the Klarna app.
