Disney Aims To Grant Parkgoers’ Wishes With New Genie Service

Disney is rolling out a new service called Genie, a digital tool designed to make visits to its theme parks simpler and more enjoyable.

“Built right into the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps, the Disney Genie service will maximize your park time, so you can have more fun,” the company said in a company blog post. “It includes a personalized itinerary feature that will quickly and seamlessly map out an entire day.”

The new service includes two new features designed to help people save time at the parks. The first is the Disney Genie+ service, which lets users pay an extra $15 per ticket per day at Disney World — or $20 per ticket per day at Disneyland — to choose the next available time to visit a variety of attractions using the parks’ Lighting Lane entrances. Visitors can make one selection at a time throughout the day. The feature also gives Disney World visitors the chance to use augmented reality lenses during their visits, as well as unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads.

The second feature is individual attraction selection, which lets visitors schedule an arrival time for up to two in-demand attractions each day. This feature is subject to limited availability. The company says pricing for this option will vary by date, attraction and park, and will be announced as the launch gets closer.

The news comes one week after Disney released a second-quarter earnings report that saw subscribers to its Disney+ streaming service jumping from 57.5 million in June 2020 to 116 million in July of this year.

Meanwhile, Disney’s direct-to-consumer revenues rose 57 percent for the quarter, hitting $4.3 billion. Meanwhile, operating losses fell from $600 million to $300 million, which the company attributed to improved results for its Hulu service.
