Here’s the thing: PYMNTS’ Provider Ranking of Payroll Apps is one of the rankings that barely ever budges. Could be because payroll changeovers and other such disruptions tend to elicit a dead-eyed response from pretty much everyone.

There are some unexpected brands making unforeseen moves here, so prepare yourself.

Nothing bad, mind. Just different from last month.

We’ll let you decide how important (or not) these chart position switch ups are.

    The Top 5

Dispensing with the easy bit, we’ve got the top 3 payroll apps of recent months still representing so no worries on that front.

At No. 1 it remains Paychex Flex. Hasn’t budged in we can’t remember how long.

That must mean that Paycor takes No. 2 — again — after raising over $425 million is its Nasdaq debut back in July.

The Alliance MyPay app sticks at No. 3. They like it there.

We’re chugging along, same scenery as last month, then wham — something unexpected happens. Like the Zenefits app moving up a spot to take No. 4 this cycle.

That gain pushes mighty Square Payroll down a spot to No. 5, closing out the ranks of tip-top apps for this go around. But we’re only halfway there. There’s something else to mention.

    The Top 10

QuickBooks Payroll takes No. 6 as it did last cycle. The software was integrated with Credit Karma Money in August, giving employees the option of having their pay deposited into a Credit Karma Money Spend account.

At No. 7 also no change, as the TriNet full-service HR solution for SMBs hold its ground.

Not wanting to disappoint or leave promises unfulfilled, here are some more changes.

The Rippling HR, payroll and benefits administration app moves up a spot to take No. 8 this cycle. Seems like yesterday that Rippling entered the ranking, and now it’s climbing.

That gain pushes the RUN Powered By ADP app down one chart position to No. 9, but this app never departs the Top 10.

Having run out of clever things to say, we state in a professional way that Payrollguru hangs in at No. 10 once again. Meditate on that until next we meet here at the Provider Ranking of Payroll Apps.
