Could McDonald’s Be PayPal’s Answer to “Squarebux?”

    The most notable payment network on the web “is in the early stages of what may be a blockbuster mobile payments deal with McDonald’s,” according to Reuters.

    The details of how a U.S.-based partnership would work are not quite clear. But Friday’s report does mention two facts: that McDonald’s is testing a PayPal-powered mobile payment service at 30 restaurant locations in France; and that similar payment technology was demoed at the burger chain’s most recent franchisee conference in Orlando earlier this year.

    Regarding the technology on display in Orlando, a McDonald’s spokesperson told Reuters to expect to see a deployment hit the market “within the next 24 months or so.”

    PayPal’s most notable retailer partnership to date is with Home Depot, where customers can use the network’s “empty hands” technology to pay for purchases without any physical object whatsoever.
