FLEETCOR Appoints Payments Industry Veteran Tom Panther as CFO

FLEETCOR Technologies has appointed Tom Panther as chief financial officer (CFO), effective May 12.

Panther most recently served as CFO at EVO Payments before its acquisition by Global Payments. Prior to that, he served in several leadership roles during 20 years at SunTrust Banks after beginning his career at Arthur Andersen, FLEETCOR said in a Wednesday (March 29) press release.

“Tom is an experienced public company CFO who knows payments,” FLEETCOR Chairman and CEO Ron Clarke said in the release. “He is a classically trained financial executive who can also help us run the business. We expect that he will hit the ground running.”

While at EVO Payments, Panther played an important role in the company delivering strong revenue growth and margin enhancement, executing key initiatives like international mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and debt and capital financings, and serving as an advisor to the board during the sale of the company, according to the release.

With Panther’s appointment as CFO, interim CFO Alissa Vickery will return to her role as chief accounting officer at the global business payments company.

This appointment comes about a week after FLEETCOR announced that it has begun a board refresh and a strategic review as part of a cooperation agreement with a longtime shareholder, global investment and technology development firm D.E. Shaw.

The board refresh includes the addition of Rahul Gupta, who is a board member and adviser to public and private FinTech companies; the upcoming addition of another mutually agreed-upon director; and then the retirement of one of the company’s longer tenured directors, FLEETCOR said March 20.

The strategic review, which is to be completed by the end of the year and aims to enhance shareholder value, encompasses both the company’s portfolio and its business configuration and may include separating one or more of FLEETCOR’s businesses, the company said at the time.

Over the last six months, FLEETCOR has acquired cloud-based electric vehicle (EV) charging software platform Mina, European workforce lodging provider Roomex and European EV software and network provider Plugsurfing.
