The fuel discount drives higher engagement and reinforces the value of the membership program, with members visiting stations more frequently for gas and turning to the discount for relief during the current surge in gas prices, Deepak Maini, senior vice president and general manager of Walmart+ membership, told Retail Brew in an exclusive interview.

“We see them come back and fuel more,” Maini told Retail Brew. “The utilization is improving. It’s growing, especially in this time, so we know that they’re relying on this to save more.”

The Walmart+ fuel discount offers members a savings of 10 cents per gallon at more than 13,000 Exxon, Mobil, Walmart and Murphy stations across the United States, according to a Walmart article about the program. In Alabama, it offers 5-cents-per-gallon savings.

Rival retail Amazon announced Tuesday (June 30) that it offers members of its Prime program fuel savings of 10 cents per gallon year-round at participating gas stations, and that in a limited-time promotion, it is offering members 50 cents per gallon off one fuel purchase over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Both the limited-time program and the year-round savings are available at 7,500 bp, Amoco, and participating ampm and Thorntons locations across the U.S.

Amazon added the fuel savings of 10 cents per gallon at participating gas stations as a benefit of Prime membership in October 2024.

PYMNTS reported at the time that the move signified a strategic effort to increase the value of Prime membership and that Walmart had added fuel saving to Walmart+ four years earlier.

Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime, said in an October 2024 press release that the company is always looking to add more value for Prime members and that “perhaps the broadest and most popular additional benefit we could offer is fuel savings.”

It was reported in February that a Morgan Stanley survey found that Walmart+ membership saw double-digit growth in February and ended the month with 28.4 million members.
