We’ve always known that our President is social-media savvy, and now, Obama’s reelection campaign is using Twitter to drum up support for former Ohio AG Richard Cordray, the nominee to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
The campaign has revamped its “Tweet for Jobs” Twitter initiative to enable Cordray supporters to Tweet one of four prepackaged notes to GOP senators allegedly holding up the nomination process. One Tweet, for example, states “stop playing politics with consumer protection.”
“As part of the jobs bill push, Twitters users who don’t live in Republican districts could send their tweets imploring for passage to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio),” explains The Hill. “In Cordray’s case, users in states with two Democratic senators can send messages to Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), the ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee who is leading the Republican senators demanding changes to the CFPB before considering Cordray’s confirmation.”
Several GOP lawmakers have vowed not to confirm any CFPB nominee until changes to the agency’s leadership structure are made.
“The changes being pushed by Republicans are: Having the bureau run by a board rather than a director; subjecting its budget to annual congressional approval; and giving other regulators more authority over bureau regulations,” explains Reuters. “Democrats have balked at these demands calling them an attempt to weaken the CFPB before it has a chance to get up and running fully.”
