Australian Customs is one step closer to choosing its supplier to upgrade its fleet of electronic gates installed inside the country’s international airports. According to a recent iTnews article, Customs has narrowed it down to two global firms France’s Morpho and Portugal-based Vision-Box for the coveted contract.
Jeff Buckpitt, Customs’ e-gate project lead, said that both companies had progressed to the testing stage of a two-year, $8.4 million trial of next generation electronic gate technology.
The news source reported that Morpho-manufactured smartgates are already operating in a number of airports across the country, which allows citizens to go through immigration processing without input from a Customs official.
Customs CEO Michael Pezzullo will receive the trial results in a report, and will then use those findings to lobby funding from his ministers, he told the news source.
“There are matters that the ministers will want to consider when the data is at hand,” he said at senate estimates. Pezzullo also listed privacy as an issue to consider, especially when it comes to the topic of biometrics, because that is one of the issues the government will inevitably have to work through.
