Report: Amazon Considering New Subscription Programs in Grocery, Healthcare

Amazon is reportedly considering introducing two new subscription programs: one in grocery and one in healthcare.

These would be stand-alone memberships for these offerings, Seeking Alpha reported Monday (Sept. 18), citing a paywalled article by Insider.

The company is also considering integrating One Medical’s primary care service with Amazon’s Prime subscription program, according to the report.

Reached by PYMNTS, an Amazon spokesperson declined to comment on the report.

The new plans may be introduced by the end of this year, according to the report.

One Medical, which is owned by Amazon, is a national hybrid in-office and virtual primary care organization. Amazon acquired One Medical in July 2022, saying that it aims to reinvent healthcare.

The company described One Medical as a tech-powered primary care provider that offers in-person, digital and virtual care services. Neil Lindsay, who heads Amazon’s health services group, said when announcing the acquisition that Amazon sees “a lot of opportunity to both improve the quality of the experience and give people back valuable time in their days.”

On the grocery front, Amazon executives said during the company’s most recent quarterly earnings call that the grocery business continues to grow.

As the company continues to leverage its fulfillment network, it will be able to add more grocery items into its same-day facilities to boost “the number of items that people can add at the last minute … and you’ll see more of that moving forward,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during the Aug. 3 call.

Later in the call, Jassy said the company has a significant business in nonperishables, but there will be a need for a “strong physical presence.”

The Insider report comes on the same day that Amazon said it is gearing up for its first Prime Big Deal Days event, which will take place from Oct. 10 to Oct. 11 and will offer discounts on a wide range of products exclusively for Prime members.

Prime Big Deal Days is a new event that is a sequel to the company’s Prime Day event. Most recently held in July, Prime Day saw Amazon sell over 375 million items worldwide in two days.
