Target has officially acknowledged reports that 40 million shoppers may have been impacted by a severe data breach that occurred from November 27 to December 15, a December 19 press released indicated.

    “We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice,” Gregg Steinhafel, president and chief executive officer of Target, said in a statement.

    Further reports confirm that the U.S. Secret Service is now involved in the investigation. USA Today indicates that online purchasers were unaffected by the breach, and that the attack was national in scope.
