The platform integrates payment technology for mobility services such as tolls, parking, fueling and electric vehicle charging, the company announced Wednesday (Nov. 20).

“With AutoKinex, we’re improving the driving experience and simplifying payments to enable drivers to pay for everyday services, such as tolls, directly from their vehicle,” Stacey Moser, executive vice president of Verra’s commercial services business, said in a news release provided to PYMNTS.

“AutoKinex also provides automakers with a scalable revenue channel by embedding today’s essential services and payments in the vehicle, paving the way for future connected mobility experiences,” Moser added.

The platform is being launched in collaboration with automaker Stellantis to offer AutoKinex to U.S. drivers of 2021 model year and newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles.

According to the release, AutoKinex allows for “seamless, secure transactions” directly from the car, without additional hardware or mobile apps. Payments are processed instantly and securely, while real-time charges are displayed in the vehicle.

The platform lets drivers of compatible vehicles pass through most toll plazas around the country. If drivers frequent gated tolling locations requiring a transponder, Verra Mobility will provide one at no cost.

“As automakers accelerate their shift toward delivering enhanced value through connected services, AutoKinex offers a plug-and-play solution that simplifies the experience for drivers,” the news release added.

“By consolidating multiple mobility services into a single, commerce-ready and intuitive platform, AutoKinex eliminates the complexity of managing disparate tools, helping manufacturers provide a seamless and smarter driving experience.”

As covered here earlier this year, in-vehicle payments technology could someday help drivers pay for things not related to their cars.

Connected vehicles are poised to become central to the automotive eCommerce ecosystem,” AiDEN Automotive CEO Niclas Gyllenram told PYMNTS.

“Unlike your phone or laptop, where the screen is the primary focus, the car’s screen is a secondary tool that can enhance the driving experience rather than distract from it.”

For instance, he said, connected vehicles can understand their environment, offering a contextual awareness that presents opportunities for personalized, relevant recommendations.

“Imagine a scenario where your car alerts you to traffic ahead and suggests a nearby café where you can take a break and refuel, not just your car but yourself,” Gyllenram said.

“We see the car as a platform for interaction and convenience, uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between online and brick-and-mortar commerce. By transforming the car into an active participant in the shopping journey, connected vehicles will redefine how consumers interact with brands and services.”
