The promotion is seen as a step toward leadership of the organization as whole — current CEO Doug McMillon and former CEO Mike Duke both held the international CEO position prior to taking lead of the company as a whole.

The current holder of the position, David Cheesewright, will stay with Walmart and work on other projects within the organization, according to sources cited by Reuters.  What the projects will be exactly have not been disclosed at this time.

McKenna will reportedly be taking up the new role starting on the first of February. Walmart international brought in net sales of $29.55 billion during the last reported quarter — representing about 25 percent of Walmart’s total net sales.
