Are we imagining it, or are prescription savings apps one of the hottest stories of the year?
No, we’re not imagining it, and yes, Rx apps are red-hot in the post-pandemic recovery.
There are many reasons for this, but the central idea tying it all together is payments, as pharmacy firms and FinTechs join forces to bring cost controls to essential (but expensive) drugs.
PYMNTS Provider Ranking of Prescription Apps tracks the rising and falling of Rx apps based on downloads, usage and other valuable metrics, so what you’re about to read can be relied on.
The latest ranking contains some fascinating changes, so do keep up.
The Top 5
At the very top of the charts, nothing’s changed.
Still at No. 1 is the GoodRx app, with a platform behind it that’s reaching deep into healthcare.
The SingleCare app maintains at No. 2, with its claim of saving as much as 80% on prescriptions.
Big dog CVS Caremark is steady at No. 3, and we keep wondering if that will go higher.
Change comes in at No. 4 as the RxSaver app gains a spot from the last ranking.
Bigger still is the Express Scripts rising one chart position to enter the Top 5 for the first time. It’s always a proud moment. Meet us outside the VIP lounge and we’ll show you around.
The Top 10
One app’s gain is another’s loss. That’s how it goes. Such is the case with the Publix Pharmacy app, falling two spots and out of the Top 5 to land at No. 6 this cycle.
Down one chart position this cycle is the OptumRx app, taking No. 7.
Likewise tumbling one spot is RxLocal, bringing the popular app to rest at No. 8.
We love it when this happens. A new entrant makes its debut in the Provider Ranking of Prescription Apps this month, and it’s Inside Rx popping into the No. 9 position.
Taking us out of the Top 10 it’s the Kroger Rx Savings Club (KrogerRxSC) app, dropping two chart positions since last cycle — and yet somehow ever-present in these rankings.
That’s what happens when you take care of your health. Even if you’re an app.
