Checks are Checking Out – Will that be Cash, Credit or Mobile?

Title: Founder and CEO

Company: PaySimple

What I’m working on now…We are always focused on ways to simplify the lives of small business owners. From how they learn about the product and get set-up, to actually interacting with our software, we focus on reducing friction every step of the way. We want the process to flow and be as seamless and intuitive as possible. From a day-to-day tactical standpoint, we are really focused on continuing to scale our partnership with American Express. We launched our product AcceptPay in December and are beginning to build real traction.

My crowning achievement is… Being asked by PYMNTS.com to launch a new feature on their Website.

Industry Association Awards… 10 best places to work in Denver (’08, ’09)

Education… BA History from University of Michigan

When I’m not working, I like to…When am I not working? Ski, play/watch pretty much any sport. The truth is, as a CEO of a fast-growing company it is hard not to be “on” all the time, as there is a part of you that is always thinking about your business. I spend so much time focused on building PaySimple that the vast majority of my non-work time is spent enjoying time with my wife and three little ones (8-5-1), and the skiing/sports take a back seat.

I think the next big thing in payments is…I am certain there are some very smart people in the Valley developing some crazy payment applications that will allow people to pay for products in ways that I can’t even conceive. Obviously mobile payments will be huge. But from my perspective, it is easy to get caught up in what the 5-10% first movers are doing and forget that less than 30% of all small businesses accept any form of electronic payment. That stat includes basic credit/debit card acceptance. It is my view that the next big thing is a mass adoption of electronic payments by small businesses, where they not only accept credit/debit cards, but also utilize online payments, electronic invoicing and automatic billing. Electronic payments will become ubiquitous and expected.

Cash is… or better said, liquidity is king.

Checks are… most likely going to be a form of payment my 8 year old never uses.

My mentor is/ I’ve learned from my mentor…I have been very fortunate to have been around and learned from many people along my journey. Most recently, I have had two investors and board of directors who have been very influential in my personal and professional growth. Eric Dunn and Devin Schain are the kinds of Directors/Advisors and investors all entrepreneurs dream of.

Interesting unknown fact about me…I was a pre-school drop-out (and don’t think I will ever live it down)
