According to a National Retail Federation study, merchants are expected to lose nearly $3 billion in fraudulent 2012 holiday season returns.

    The study also noted that merchants will lose $8.9 billion in fraudulent returns for the entire year, and that 4.6 of holiday returns are expected to be bogus.
