Metrorex, the Romanian mass transit system in Bucharest, along with mobile phone providers Orange and Vodafone, will begin to allow mobile payments for commuters this month. This launch will expand to all of the Bucharest metro system, following a successful pilot of the mPayment service in several metro stations in Bucharest in 2012.
Customers of Orange and Vodafone mobile will be able to send a text message to an assignment phone number, pay for their journey and receive confirmation by text. After receiving confirmation, the commuter must hold the phone up to a device at the metro’s entrance, validating their purchase.
