Year-over-year holiday spending dipped 3.9 percent over the Thanksgiving weekend, according to new data from the National Retail Federation.

Despite the decline, more shoppers visited both malls and online stores. The NRF reported that 141 million consumers shopped this past holiday weekend, a 2 million-person increase from 2012.

Matthew Shay, the NRF’s chief executive officer, struck a positive tone about the findings in an interview with Reuters.

“Retailers will continue to aggressively promote their in-store and online offerings, looking to entice today’s very budget-conscious and value-focused shopper,” he said.
