According to Swain, the CBI is in “a uniquely strong position to have a code of conduct for [its] members, big or small, about what is appropriate.”

“What seems to have happened here, there’s been a huge loss of understanding what appropriate behavior is and I actually think the CBI, in the strong position that they’re in, could set a precedent for guidelines about what’s appropriate for their members,” she said.

According to other panelists, things can be done to ensure fair and transparent payment terms throughout the recruitment supply chain more widely. For example, Philip King, chief executive at the Institute for Credit Management, more transparency is needed, as well as effective legislation. Overall though, King said that good credit management skills are needed “because sometimes it’s the supplier that gets it wrong and doesn’t use the right invoice number or send it to the right place.”
