Underground Cybercrime Rings Responsible For Target Breach?

New evidence suggests that an underground cybercrime ring — or rings — may be involved in the merchant-data breaches taking place recently.

The fact that point-of-sale malware can be acquired with relative ease on the Internet, as well as signs from security officials that multiple individuals may be involved with the breaches, reinforces the idea of an underground conspiracy, McClatchy reported on Feb. 2.

McClatchy cited the FBI, which has said that several POS malware variants are behind dozens of data attacks on retailers.

In an interview, Brian Krebs, author of KrebsOnSecurity, said that a group of hackers is most likely responsible for the attacks.

“I would imagine there’s an entire group of individuals that carefully planned this attack against Target and very probably used other victim organizations they broke into through 2013 as sort of test cases,” Krebs said.
