Businesses Boost Demand For The Tablet

Consumers may not have been crazy about Google Glass, but Google is hoping that enterprise might. Indeed, analysts say that wearable technology could take off in a big way in the workplace, even as consumers remain shy about adopting such products.

A similar trend is emerging for another gadget: the tablet. Globally, tablet sales among consumers are falling. Apple alone saw a 23 percent decrease in iPad sales in the second quarter of 2015 compared with the same quarter in 2014.

But according to new research, the tablet industry may not need to worry thanks to the rising use of the tools among the workforce.

Forrester Research published its findings on the topic on Monday (July 13). Entitled “Global Tablet Forecast 2015 To 2018: Despite Market Volatility, Tablets Are Big In Business,” the report predicted that enterprise tablet use is actually on the rise even as consumer use drops. Researchers found that 6 percent of the market in 2010 consisted of enterprise tablet use, a figure that is expected to rise to 20 percent by 2018.

The report’s author, J.P. Gownder, found that while an array of factors can hamper consumer purchasing of the tablet, including a lack of device replacement as well as a lack of new innovations for the device, the market climate is encouraging businesses to adopt tablets for their workforce. This is partly due to tablet developers’ efforts in the space. Apple recently partnered with IBM, for example, to develop a slew of enterprise apps to be used on mobile phones and tablets by workers.

But businesses are also increasing their demand for the technology. According to Forrester, more than half of information workers already use a tablet at least once a week for their jobs. The Bring Your Own Device movement, too, means workers are bringing their own tablets and using them during the workday, researchers found.

The shifting landscape of the workforce is similarly driving enterprise tablet adoption. Tablets are especially useful for workers that aren’t bound to a desk. For example, researchers said, delivery drivers can use the device to manage their workflow, while waiters can provide a tablet for restaurant patrons to view a menu and order items.
