eCommerce Platform Nacelle Nets $50 Million in Funding

Headless eCommerce platform Nacelle has generated $50 million in Series B funding, the company announced Thursday (August 19). Tiger Global funded the latest funding round, which follows the company’s Series A funding six months ago.

Nacelle will use funds to step up its penetration into the online shopping market, broaden its customer success, bolster partner relations, and expand product development.

By 2023, Gartner Research said that 50 percent of new commerce potential will be implemented as application programming interface (API)-centric software-as-a-service, representing a dramatic change in the current landscape.

“Brands are turning to headless commerce to accelerate their pace of innovation and create unique and compelling online shopping experiences,” said Brian Anderson, Nacelle CEO and founder. “Smart commerce leaders are getting ahead of the headless wave by focusing on performance, developer productivity, and simplifying the adoption of best-of-breed, modern technology.”

In response to the dynamic shift, Nacelle, which was founded in 2019, creates headless platforms by offering a single unified GraphQL API layer to step up both access to backend systems and shopping experiences. The company’s software developments integrate with various commerce platforms, online stores and content management systems.

Dozens of direct-to-consumer companies on Shopify Plus have collaborated with Nacelle in creating eCommerce sites that mirror Shopify’s performance.

Similarly, as PYMNTS reported in July, eCommerce platform Fabric has raised $100 million in Series B funding to compete in the multitrillion-dollar eCommerce market against Shopify. The company strives to help thousands of mid-size and enterprise B2B and B2C companies with their eCommerce needs.

The eCommerce space continues to become more crowded as more and platforms compete for online merchants. As PYMNTS reported recently, Shogun, an online shopping tech platform, raised $67.5 million in a funding round. The company offers Page Builder for Shopify merchants and Shogun Frontend, a headless commerce offering. Recent funds will be used to accelerate product build-out for Shogun Frontend.
