Grabango Adding Checkout-Free Tech to MAPCO Stores

Checkout-free technology platform Grabango has partnered with convenience store chain MAPCO to add checkout-free operation to its locations across the southeastern U.S., starting in Tennessee, according to a Tuesday (Feb. 15) press release.

    “Grabango and MAPCO share a vision to simplify things for the on-the-go consumer,” Grabango CEO Will Glaser said in the joint announcement. “We are excited to bring checkout-free shopping to a new region.

    “As Grabango enters its fifth major metro area, we are pleased to be able to offer this free service to MAPCO’s customers,” he said.

    Grabango’s checkout-free services will be available in two Tennessee MAPCO stores by fall 2022, one of which feature MAPCO’s “store of the future” experience.

    MAPCO has more than 330 convenience and fuel retailing stores across Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Virginia, Kentucky and Mississippi.

    “Our team is constantly thinking of ways to always improve MAPCO’s guest experience,” Frederic Chaveyriat, chief executive officer at MAPCO, said in the announcement. “We’re committed to helping our guests take a Better Break, where they can refresh and recharge at their pace with quality products and services at convenient prices that are more relevant to them.

    “Grabango’s shopper-focused offering, combined with their proven success in the market, is why we’ve chosen them to help us execute on our shared vision,” he said.

    Grabango has seven major retail partners, including a global top 10 grocer, two Fortune 500 companies and a Fortune 25 multinational corporations, representing a combined 200 million square feet of retail space.

    In September, Giant Eagle launched Grabango cashierless payments at four GetGo Café + Market convenience/fuel locations in Pennsylvania after piloting the program in one store in Fox Chapel, Pa., last year, with more to come in GetGo stores and possibly Giant Eagle supermarkets too.

    The checkout-free system is in place at GetGo stores in Ross Township, Wexford, Cranberry Township and Mars, all Pittsburgh suburbs.
