MasterCard Exec’s Coy Response on Apple’s NFC Plans

Ed McLaughlin, MasterCard’s Head of Emerging Payments, has dropped some hints that Apple’s iPhone 5 will be a frontrunner in the NFC payments sphere, according to a report by Fast Company.

    While the technology is still in the preliminary stages, McLaughlin emphasized that he remains “bullish” on its future prospects and usage. When specifically asked about Apple, his reply stirred the pot: “Um, there are…like I say, [I don’t know of] any handset maker out there. Now, when we have discussions with out partners, and they ask us not to disclose them, we don’t.”

    While he remained coy on Apple’s overall objective, McLaughlin did add, “I think as merchants provide these better interfaces for customers—a better way of transacting—I think any consumer-focused technology would want to take advantage of it.”
