NFC Forum Tries To Put Out Fires With New Questions About Security

After security celebrity Charlie Miller delivered a presentation on near-field communication technology entitled, “Don’t stand so close to me: An analysis of the NFC attack surface,” new questions arose about the safety of one of the main engines of contactless payments.

    To address those questions, NFC Forum Director Debbie Arnold issued an official statement to NFC World this week.

    “Mr. Miller’s demonstration underscores the importance of providing appropriate security measures at the application layer and enabling users to adjust security settings to suit their own needs and preferences,” Arnold said. She also added a security recommendation of her own: all NFC devices should include an option that requires user confirmation before data is received, and that option should be turned on by default.
