Facebook Sued For Private Message Practices

Facebook is being sued by an Arkansas lawyer and political blogger Matt Campbell for allegedly using data from private messages to improve the effectiveness of its advertising, Business Insider reported on January 2.

Campbell filed the class-action lawsuit on December 30 in the U.S. Disctrict Court for the Northern District of California.

“Contrary to its representations, ‘private’ Facebook messages are systematically intercepted by the Company in an effort to learn the contents of the users’ communications,” the complaint reads, according to the news source. “This practice…enables Facebook to mine user data and profit from those data by sharing them with third parties – namely, advertisers, marketers and other data aggregators.”

Campbell is requesting that affected users be reimbursed for the actions. For more on this developing story and its legal grounds, read the full report here.
