Facebook Announces Operator Billing at MWC

Facebook is partnering with many of the world’s biggest mobile operators to allow users to apply charges directly to their monthly wireless bills.

Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, Vodafone, KDDI and Softbank Mobile have all signed on to offer billing services for their mobile customers’ Facebook Credits purchases, said Facebook Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor in remarks delivered at this week’s Mobile World Congress 2012 event in Barcelona.

“We’re eliminating the SMS verification step and giving users a single step to confirm their purchase,” Taylor said, according to a Fierce Mobile Content report. “We’re unlocking the business potential of the mobile web.”

TechCrunch wonders if today’s announcement may have to do with the recently forged partnership between Facebook and U.K.-based Bango, which was announced earlier this month. The tech blog also confirms that today’s new advancement works with Boku and Zong.
