One city, one night, two accusations of robbery made against Uber drivers.
Atlanta Business Chronicle broadcast partner WXIA-TV reported on Sunday (Dec. 27) that two Atlanta citizens made allegations that they were attacked and robbed by their Uber drivers — similar incidents that (allegedly) occurred a few miles apart from each other.
The first reported allegation — which WXIA-TV notes picked up traction on and spread through social media — was that a woman claimed her brother was picked up by an Uber driver who proceeded to beat him and leave him for dead; she attests that an off-duty police officer happened upon the victim hours later and rescued him.
Uber, for its part, attests that the first incident never happened. The company shared with WXIA-TV that the driver who was accused via social media actually canceled the trip in question and picked up someone else. Additionally supporting Uber’s defense, WXIA-TV notes, is the fact there is no record of the incident on file with the Atlanta Police Department.
As for the second allegation (which does have a police report to go with it) — in which a man claims to have been robbed at gunpoint by an Uber driver and another passenger who stole his wallet, phone and $100 in cash — Uber tells WXIA-TV that the company has no knowledge of the incident but is investigating both it and the other allegation.
