Reuters asked Amazon for the company’s views after several other large AI labs called for a slowdown in AI development in response to concerns about AI safety, according to the report.
“We don’t see it as a choice between progress and safety,” an Amazon spokesperson said, per the report. “Models should be released when they’re ready and safe to use, which comes from rigorous testing and strong safeguards.”
The spokesperson said there are risks if progress in developing AI doesn’t happen collectively, according to the report.
“We believe that as an industry, in partnership with government, we’ll work through the right protections,” the Amazon spokesperson said, per the report.
Several prominent figures in frontier AI have commented on a proposed slowdown in the technology’s development over the past week after some high-profile incidents in which AI agents went rogue on the open internet.

Anthropic CEO and Co-Founder Dario Amodei published an essay Saturday (Sept. 12) in which he said he wants independent evaluators inside leading AI companies and governments to slow the race toward more powerful models.
The trigger was an incident in which a swarm of AI agents conducted cybersecurity attacks on targets they were not asked to attack, including breaching Hugging Face, and attempted to hack into the “grader” evaluating their own performance.
It was reported Monday (Sept. 14) that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman backed Amodei’s proposal, agreeing AI companies should “pace the frontier” and matching Anthropic’s evaluator commitment. But he drew a line.
“When we talk about ‘pacing,’ we do not mean ‘stopping,’” Altman said, per the report.
Microsoft joined those lobbying for a slowdown in AI’s development on Monday, when it published a new AI code of conduct based around the concept of “Humanist AI.”
The company’s move came a day after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called for a “deliberate pacing” of AI development.
