Singapore and Canada rank ahead of the United States on MasterCard’s Mobile Payments Readiness Index, which was made public this week.
The index ranks each nation’s readiness for mobile payment adoption according to several factors, including consumer readiness, environment, financial services, and infrastructure.
Despite ranking third on MasterCard’s readiness list, the United States is not among the top five in terms of consumer demand for mobile payment solutions — in fact, the U.S. barely makes the top ten. Kenya, Nigeria and the Philippines are tops in terms of nations that are demanding mobile solutions, MasterCard says. Furthermore, nine of the ten nations at the top of its Consumer Readiness rankings come from Asia/Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa.
The study used data collected between October 2011 and February 2012 to evaluate the mobile readiness of 34 nations. The full ranking, as well as more detailed information about each of MasterCard’s index components, is available online.
