India Moves Toward NFC-Powered Rail Ticketing
Metro rails in India are considering a mass scale adoption of NFC technology in an automatic fare collection system, according to mydigitalfc.com. The news source reports that Chennai Metro Rail Ltd has invited bids from banks to participate in enabling cashless transactions when it is introduced. Also, the Delhi Metro Rail project is said to have started its own NFC-based ticketing systems that would eliminate long lines, the news source reports. With the price of NFC enabled handsets at around Rs. 10,000 (approx. $200), there still remain doubts as to wide scale adoption. However, according to D. Shivakumar, Senior VP of Sales at Nokia (India, West Asia and Africa), as prices of phones come down, the applications of NFC would be part of day-to-day transactions.
