That’s what a new survey by Monetate aims to answer, as it breaks down the country into three groups: “blue” states, that traditionally vote for Democrats, “red” states that lean Republican and “swing” states that were too close to call in the days leading up to the 2012 Election.

Do Democrats or Republicans spend more online? That depends on what you’re measuring. Traditionally blue states shop online with leading retailers more than Republicans by a wide margin. In fact, evens swing states surpass red ones by this measurement. But when it comes to average order value, Republicans gain a slight lead over Democrats, by a score of $92.22 to $91.62. Swing states fall back here, coming in at $87.63.

How did the candidates’ home states stack up? In President Obama’s stomping grounds of Illinois, the average order value of an eCommerce purchase is $89.06, with around 80 percent of all transactions coming via PC (62.70 percent) or Mac (17.63 percent). In Massachusetts, where Governor Romney resides, the average order value rings in at a similar $88.10, and around 83 percent of transactions come from a desktop. Massachusetts, though, was a little more Mac-friendly, using an Apple computer for 24.31 percent of transactions, compared to 59.12 percent via PC.
Mobile Commerce vs. Mobile Traffic
Maryland leads the mCommerce trend nationwide, with 12 percent of all eCommerce transactions coming via iPhone or Android phones. Montana, Iowa and Maine are three least likely states to make mobile purchases, all finishing at under 4 percent. In terms of website traffic, Georgia, Maryland and Connecticut surf using iPhones, while Maryland, Ohio and Mississippi rank in the top three for Android use. Undecided voters shop less on iPhones, while Android use is largely equal across all voting demographics.

Texas, Alaska and New Jersey are all above 9 percent as well, while Nevada comes in fifth at 8.99 percent. Which states contribute the least to iPad-related commerce?
