In the first half of 2012 1.5 million Dutch consumers conducted a purchase using a mobile device. According to Blauw Research this presents a 103% increase compared to the same period last year.

While we reported that the Dutch are still very attached to cash, with 65% of POS transactions being carried out with that payment method. However, more and more consumers from the Netherlands are using their cards to pay for purchases on their mobile devices. Most purchases were mobile apps or software, followed by music and then more traditional e-commerce sectors like clothes, shoes, and books.
Dutch consumers prefer to shop on their smartphones rather than tablets, as the market is not yet very developed in the country. Smartphone penetration is high but not saturated – there is a lot of potential for the market.

Blauw predicts that by the end of the year 2 million consumers will have shopped through their mobile device.
