Gemalto’s Trusted Service Manager facilitates mobile payment technology between financial institutions and mobile operators and bridges the gap between different operators.

The solution is currently being piloted before its full commercial launch in mid-2013, but SIA has already found support from Italy’s main telecom operators and banks – who will see their NFC services being provided through the company’s central hub. “By creating a central hub, we meet the needs of both the banking and telecoms sectors fostering the NFC ecosystem and mobile payments,” said Nicola Cordone, SIA Deputy General Manager.

With this partnership, up to 200,000 contactless payment terminals will be deployed in Italy by the end of 2013. This will turn Italy into a top country for NFC payments in Europe, but also into a prime example of how to get competing stakeholders together to launch the technology on a large scale.
