French Groceries Go Contactless

E Leclerc, a French supermarket chain, will launch new NFC electronic shelf labels in six hypermarkets sometime this year, reported NFC World. This roll out follows the chain’s well-received introduction of the NFC technology at a Parisian suburb store in December 2012.

    The shop’s shelf labels were placed at the edge of each shelf and shoppers were instructed to tap NFC-enabled phones against the label. Details about the product were then transferred to the phone, and included information about warnings, allergies and coupons. Shoppers can even use the app to keep track of the cost of items in their basket.
