FIDO Takes A Bite Out Of Passwords

The FIDO Alliance has released a public draft of standards designed to improve access security.

The group, composed of PayPal, Google and other companies in the tech space, published the draft, which calls for moving away from traditional password-based security systems, Forbes reported on Feb. 11.

“We see daily occurrences of just how bad the password model is,” Forrester Research analyst Eve Maler told Forbes in an interview, arguing, “the way out of the mess is not going to arrive through a proprietary solution devised by any single company – it’s too big a problem. It is a system problem that requires cooperation and standard building blocks.”

A PIN-like system for logging in to sensitive websites would replace current password-base structures. Hardware such as dongles may also play a role in the new process, as would biometrics.
