Nearly Half Of All Americans “Hacked” In The Last Year

About 110 million Americans were hacked in the last year, almost half of all U.S. adults, according to reports from Digital Trends. Information lost to hackers includes names, telephone numbers, social security numbers, credit card information and the answers to security questions.

According to Digital Trends, these numbers are gleaned from the Ponemon Institute and CNN Money and are not to be taken as exact figures as they are an amalgam of information from corporate disclosures and the Identity Theft Resources Center.

The scope of American data compromise last year is inflated by some marquee breaches, including the Heartbleed bug and the Target hack—as well as some smaller compromises like those recently observed at eBay and AOL.

Of bigger concern is the level of sophistication with the hacks, which are going longer and longer without being noticed by internal security protocols.
