Why ‘Dark Data’ Is Actually A Good Thing

According to Bloomberg’s enterprise information management service branch Bloomberg Vault, there is a way for companies to “identify, categorize, track and manage” unstructured data held in corporate files and documents.

Bloomberg Vault calls this information “dark data,” and recently announced that it has a hybrid, cloud-based service to help businesses keep track of it and use it in meaningful ways.

Harald Collet, global head of Bloomberg Vault explained to Banking Technology that businesses often struggle to capture and then organize unstructured data in corporate file shares and enterprise repositories.

“This ‘dark data’ presents firms with significant challenges and opportunities,” Collet said. “Bloomberg Vault File Analytics helps firms address these challenges and derive more value from their data by enabling them to manage, analyze, and control large amounts of enterprise information.”

The system operates by setting up a virtual machine behind the client’s firewall that scans the metadata of files, according to Collet. The data is then given back to the cloud-hosted Bloomberg Vault. Finally, the information is analyzed using a range of templates according to what the client needs.

The news source stated that File Analytics will be available to organizations next month, and pricing will be based on data volumes.
