Amazon To Hire 1,900 Workers For Virginia HQ2

Amazon is hiring 1,900 technical and non-technical workers for its HQ2 in Arlington, Virginia’s Pentagon City area just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., according to an announcement.

There are currently 1,600 workers at HQ2, the announcement stated. The Seattle-based eCommerce giant said it will hire 25,000 people for HQ2 and the surrounding area over the next 10 years.

Amazon also released new images of the building set to be the centerpiece of the HQ2 complex, which the company said in the announcement will consist of three 22-story towers. Amazon is calling the focal point — and entryway for the overall complex — The Helix, a reference to the building’s double-helix structure.

DNA is similarly shaped, but in scale renderings of Amazon’s Helix, featuring live trees sprouting from a terrace-like structure that winds its way from bottom to top, the Helix tower looks more like a gigantic Christmas tree.

“The natural beauty of a double helix can be seen throughout our world, from the geometry of our own DNA to the elemental form of galaxies, weather patterns, pinecones and seashells,” Amazon said in a previous announcement regarding the new buildings. “The Helix at our Arlington headquarters will offer a variety of alternative work environments for Amazon employees amidst lush gardens and flourishing trees native to the region.”

In all, Amazon said in the announcement, HQ2 will encompass 2.8 million square feet of new office space. Amazon will invest $2.5 billion in HQ2 and the area around it.
