Uber Eats in Japan is collaborating with Rakuten Group to offer users an additional online payment option, according to a press release on Monday (April 18).

Rakuten Pay, the Rakuten Group’s online payment service, processes payments using the credit card linked to the Rakuten ID system. Rakuten Pay will be available to all users for ordering food and groceries on Uber Eats by the end of this month.

The Rakuten Pay option also enables users to earn Rakuten Points when ordering through Uber Eats and pay for orders using earned points.

“Current users of both services will be able to log in to Uber Eats using their Rakuten ID, while new Uber Eats users will have the convenient option of creating an account through a simplified registration system using their Rakuten ID,” according to the release.

Both companies are marking the joint effort with a limited-time Rakuten Pay Introductory Campaign on Uber Eats, starting on April 27.

New Uber Eats customers will earn a coupon for 3,000 yen off on their first order. New users will also get a coupon for 50% off any additional orders placed during the campaign period. Additional perks include receiving Rakuten Points worth up to 20% of order amounts after the corresponding discount has been applied.

Meanwhile, existing Uber Eats users will receive Rakuten Points worth up to 3% of the order amount after the corresponding discount has been applied on all orders placed during the campaign period. Both companies also have plans in the works for special sale events on Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten’s online marketplace.

The collaboration with Rakuten aligns Uber’s efforts to make its services more accessible in international markets. Uber recently launched ride-booking on WhatsApp in India in December.

Rakuten has over 100 million members in Japan and is the fourth mobile network in the country, according to a Bloomberg report.
