Chrome 95 Offers 19 Security Fixes, Provides Secure Payment Confirmation

Google Chrome

Google is launching the latest version of its Chrome web browser on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS in the coming days, according to a Thursday (Oct. 21) report from XDA.

Among the many improvements in the latest version are 19 security updates, as well as a secure payment confirmation via WebAuthn, according to Google. The payment authentication feature adds a new payment extension to WebAuthn, which provides for an entity, including a bank, to create a PublicKeyCredential that any retailer can inquire about via an online checkout process, according to Google.

“This feature enables a consistent, low friction, strong authentication experience using platform authenticators,” Google wrote in a post. “Strong authentication with the user’s bank is becoming a requirement for online payments in many regions, including the European Union. The proposed feature provides better user experience and stronger security than existing solutions.”

In addition, the Chrome 95 release features a default Material You redesign for all users on Android 12. According to a report from 9 To 5 Google, Chrome began launching the Material You redesign in part with the Chrome 93 release. One of the main aspects of Android 12’s Material You reimagining is the ability for users to use their current wallpaper colors throughout their favorite apps, according to 9 To 5 Google.

The latest Chrome release also limits cookie sizes with the sum of the lengths of the cookie’s name and value limited to 4096 bytes and a maximum length of each cookie set at 1024 bytes, according to Google.
