Hacker Steals Mt. Gox Source Code, Customer Data

04 March 2014

The source code for Mt. Gox, the troubled virtual-currency exchange, has been leaked online by an anonymous hacker.

Additionally, the person also disclosed to TechCrunch that he or she stole 20GB worth of customer information, including allegedly passport and other personal identification data.

The leaker is reportedly Russian. In an IRC chat posted to the online text sharing service Pastebin, the alleged leaker cited a desire for Mark Karpeles, Mt. Gox’s CEO, and others at the company to own up to their errors that cost customers hundreds of millions of dollars in bitcoins.

Economist David S. Evans noted in a recent commentary that Bitcoin’s issues as a currency and a payment system extend far beyond the problems posed by a single online exchange. Read his step-by-step argument by clicking here.
