What Will Warren Do? Her Former Student and Current Harvard Professor Shares Insights

University of Iowa College of Law professor Katherine Porter might have a pretty good idea what’s going on inside Elizabeth Warren’s head these days. Not only is Porter currently a visiting professor at Warren’s old stomping grounds, Harvard Law School, but she is a former student of the famed consumer advocate herself.

In the exclusive NEXTcast interview, Porter shares with David S. Evans her insights into the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s work on mortgage foreclosures and predicts how the new organization will interact with the payments industry.

Bio: Katherine Porter is a professor at the University of Iowa College of Law, where she teaches bankruptcy, commercial law, and consumer law. During the 2010-2011 academic year, she is the Robert Braucher Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School. Beginning July 2011, she will be Professor of Law at the University of California Irvine School of Law.

Porter conducts empirical research on families in financial distress and on consumer protection law. She is a principal investigator in the 2007 Consumer Bankruptcy Project and a fellow of the Bankruptcy Data Project at Harvard. Her empirical project, the Mortgage Study, generated data on the practices of mortgage servicers in bankruptcy cases and the challenges that homeowners face in trying to save their homes from foreclosure. Her current research examines the consequences of severe financial distress and includes a study of outcomes from chapter 13 bankruptcy.

Porter’s recent articles include “Life After Debt” in the American Bankruptcy Institute law Review, “Saving up for Bankruptcy” in the Georgetown Law Journal, and “Misbehavior and Mistake in Bankruptcy Mortgage Claims” in the Texas Law Review. She has testified several times before Congress on consumer credit issues and has made media appearances on ABC Nightline, The Today Show, National Public Radio and in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and Newsweek. She is a regular contributor to Credit Slips, a blog about credit and bankruptcy.

Before entering academia, Porter clerked for Judge Richard Sheppard Arnold of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. She earned her B.A. from Yale University, and her J.D. from Harvard Law School.
